Root Canal Therapy Explained
Sometimes tooth decay advances and impacts the health of the tooth, root, mouth, or jaw and causes infections. Root canals can be a necessary treatment to prevent further complications.
Infections
Infections typically occur when bacteria get into the dental pulp, or nerve, of the tooth through large decay, a crack, or periodontal disease. Sometimes the bacteria spread into the jawbone and cause a dental abscess.
Removal of the Root
During root canal treatment, Dr. Allison Hurlbut or Dr. Kelsey Sasse will remove the infected nerve of the tooth and fill the nerve space with a hospital-grade rubberized material to help prevent future re-infection.
Less Pain Due to Technology
Due to the advancements in technology many patients experience little to no pain during this treatment. In fact, it is more likely to have pain from a decayed tooth.
Advanced Cases
In some more advanced cases, patients might be referred to an Endodontist. Before any of these decisions are made they will give you all the facts and make sure the path forward is what is best for you and your smile.
Medications
Antibiotics and oral steroids are often used to mediate pain and infection management before and after root canal treatment.
