At Hurlbut Dental in Lincoln, NE our goal is to care for you and your family through all the ages and stages, including the little ones’ pediatric dentistry care. We love seeing parents and kids come into our office and watching them grow as we care for their beautiful smiles. Pediatric Dentistry is very important to start early.
When Should A Child’s First Appointment Be?
Dr. Allie Hurlbut and Dr. Kelsey Sasse hope to see your child at one year of age and then every 6 months after that. Your child is making giant steps every day and their first dental visit should definitely be one for the baby book. This early appointment allows our dentists to visually see how your child’s mouth is forming and how those baby teeth are going to come in. Once your child’s first baby tooth is coming in, you should begin planning to make an appointment so our dentists can make sure those baby teeth are healthy and clear of cavities.
How to Prepare for Your Child’s First Appointment
The sooner you can prepare your child for his/her first visit the more comfortable and easy the appointment will be. One easy way to do this is by practicing asking your child to open their mouth. Our team is trained well for uncooperative moments, but the process is always easier if your child can do it on his/her own.
Parents can prepare for these appointments as well. You can ask if there are any medical forms or records that you need to bring or have filled out ahead of time. This makes the process much easier on both the office and you as the parent. You’ll be able to spend more time with your child and experience this new milestone with them.
What To Expect on Your Child’s First Visit
At Hurlbut Dental the first visit for pediatric dentistry care begins with an oral exam to make sure his/her jaw and teeth are developing correctly and that there aren’t any mouth injuries or cavities. During this appointment it may be more comfortable for you and your child to sit together in the dental chair, to eliminate squirming. If your child becomes fussy or nervous, don’t worry, this is a common reaction for little ones, as they are in a new environment and meeting new people. Some great tips to avoid some discomfort for your child include:
- Avoid scheduling an appointment during your child’s respected nap time. Make sure they are well rested and feeling happy.
- Plan to give your child a light meal before the appointment and brush their teeth, so they won’t be hungry during their visit.
- Save snacks for after the visit to keep food off of your child’s teeth during their appointment.
- Try to keep the appointment a fun experience for your child. If your child becomes fussy or upset, attempt to calm them down with the help of our team! Remember we want them to love coming to the dentist as much as you do!
